New Orleans, 1898. Gabriel is the son of poor Italian immigrants. Lucy works as a prostitute in a brothel in the Storyville district, where prostitution and gambling are completely legal. With unprecedented opportunities available to an orphan from the wrong side of the tracks, Lucy sets her sights on becoming a Storyville power player, and enlists Gabriel as her partner. Together, Lucy and Gabriel test the limits of ambition and an uphill pursuit of the American Dream against a backdrop of jazz, race riots, Voo Doo, religious reformers, corruption, the Mafia, and a string of unsolved ax murders. The pair will tow the lines at which morality becomes repression, necessity becomes greed, and ambition becomes obsession.
